How to play Blu-ray Disc on Kodi

Kodi (formerly XBMC) is a free and open-source media player software, which is a popular multi-platform alternative to Windows Media Center for HTPC (Home Theater PC) use. Recently I noticed some issues in Blu-ray playback on Kodi.

Q: “Is there anyone with a HTPC that can recommend a way to set up Kodi formally (XMBC) to play back Blu Ray I have tried numerous codec packs plus installed other players but Kodi or even WMP for that matter don't pick up the codecs.”

Actually, Kodi supports most common audio, video, and image formats. Kodi can also play Blu-rays but only unencrypted ones at the moment(licensing issues). If you want to play encrypted Blu-ray on Kodi, basically your best bet is to use an external player or rip Blu-ray to Roku friendly file type like MP4. Now I will show you how to rip and copy Blu-ray movies to Kodi easily and fast.

To do the Blu-ray and Kodi conversion task, we need to get some help from third-party software. The best program for ripping Blu-ray movies for Kodi, I can recommend here is Brorsoft Blu-ray Ripper. It aims to solve this problem by giving us the ability to store our purchased physical Blu-ray and DVD discs to local computer, hard drive then playback anywhere you want. So, applying the app, you can rip videos off Blu-ray disc and convert them to Kodi preferred format. It’s professional in ripping and converting (3D)Blu-ray/DVD discs, Blu-ray/DVD ISO image, Blu-ray/DVD copies and more. For Mac users, please turn to Blu-ray ripper for Mac to convert Blu-rays to Kodi on Mac OS X.

Here is the step-by-step guide on ripping, converting Blu-ray to Kodi:

NOTE: Anywhere from 30 to 60 GB of hard disk space is needed depending on what you’re ripping. Blu- Rays are big, and we’re going to rip the whole thing to our drive first, so depending on the movie you’re ripping and the quality you want in your final movie file, you’ll need a good amount of space.

Step 1: Load Blu-ray movies

Insert your Blu-ray disc into your BD drive, run the Blu-ray Ripper for Kodi and click "BD/DVD disc" icon to load movies.

Step 2. Select a Kodi compatible format

Click the “Format” option, and choose .MP4, .MKV or .AVI from Common Video profile list. If you want to keep 1080p resolution as source movie, you can choose HD Video > H.264 HD Video(*.mp4) for Kodi.

Tip: If you like, you can click “Settings” to change the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Keep in mind the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible quality loss, and vice versa.

Step 3. Start ripping Blu-ray for Kodi

Finally, hit the "Convert" button at the bottom of the main interface to start the conversion. It will automatically convert Blu-ray to Kodi compatible MP4, MKV, AVI video files.

Once the conversion is finished, click "Open" to quickly find the converted movies. Then, it’s easy to put and play Blu-ray movies on Kodi with the best quality.
