Finding a way to copy protected DVD into digital backup to avoid unusable after play over and over again? It is not as simple as is sometimes thought.

In this article we will specifically show you what's DVD copyright protection, DVD copy protection types, the legality to remove copy protection from DVD, recommended copyright protection removal software and how to strip those copy protection measures off DVD discs.

What's DVD Copyright Protection?

This has been a heated issue for a long time among DVD collectors who attempt to make a backup of movies to protect original DVD from scratch or damage. And this issue has been consistently doomed to whether the DVDs are copyright protected or not.

But the truth is almost all the latest DVD releases, published by no matter Disney or Warner, are encrypted, and not all people are clear about DVD copyright protection.

Detailed DVD Copy Protection Types

2016 Disney New DVD Copy Protection

It is probably the most complicated DVD copyright protection schemes used by Disney. Generally, the DVD encoded with Disney new copyright protection comes with 99 titles that many software fails to select the right one.

And newer DVDs appear in an oversized way, up to 50GB, making it impossible to make a backup of it. Worse still, the Disney new copy protection scheme may lead to crash halfway when ripping Disney protected DVDs with Handbrake.

2016 The Analog Protection System (APS) Another DVD copyright protection system originally developed by Macrovision. Videos copied from DVDs encoded with APS become garbled and unwatchable.
2016 Sony ARccOS DVD protection

A copy-protection system used on most Sony DVDs. The system deliberately creates corrupted sectors on the DVD, which leads copying software to produce errors.

2016 Content Scramble System (CSS) Encryption

An encryption system capitalizes on a proprietary 40-bit stream cipher algorithm, which was introduced to stop byte-for-byte copies of an MPEG (digital video) stream from being playable.

This DVD copyright protection measure has been superseded by newer DRM scheme like CPRM that has 56-bit or 128-bit key sizes, providing a much higher level of security than the weak 40-bit key size of CSS. And you will need a program to rip a CSS protected DVD.

2016 DVD Region Code

This is achieved by way of region-locked DVD players, which will play back only DVDs encoded to their region.

However, region-free DVD players, which ignore region coding, are also commercially available, and many DVD players can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs.

2016 User operation prohibition (UOP)

A form of use restriction on DVD discs. The viewers are prohibited from performing a large majority of actions on a DVD that is restricted by this scheme.

Generally, copyright notices and FBI warning (in the United States) will be displayed if any of these actions are attempted. Some publishers also encode "protected" commercials on their DVDs.

Is it legal to backup DVD?

This issue has been in argument for many years. In most countries, it’s illegal to circumvent the CSS and AACS in any forms. Thus, DVD backup would be at a risk of defying the Digital Copyright Act.

However, in some countries, the law allows people to make a single backup for the purchased DVD for the learning and research purpose. While in some other countries, you can freely deal with the things you purchased but you can’t infringe the copy right. That means you backup DVD discs then spread them. The law may allow your backup but don’t allow you to spread the backed up content or use the backed up content in commercial occasion.

According to our understanding, you may make single DVD backup for your purchased discs for the purpose of storage, learning and research. But any form of spreading the backed up content is illegal. Sometimes, you will find it unfair. As you have purchased the DVD Disc, it means the disc is your own property. You have the right to deal with your own property, right? This will be debated for years and the overall opinion is that you should be able to make a copy as a backup if it’s for personal use only.

The last thing is that if the DVD is recorded by yourself, for example, you made a DVD Disc to memorize the happy time or event, it means you have the whole right to the DVD discs, you can freely copy, rip, convert and backup them.
